Why punjabis are so proud

We are proud of GURU TEG BAHADUR JI, who gave his life for the protection of the kashmiri pandits because he believed in equality for all and that everyone has a right to follow their own religion.

We are proud of many and i repeat MANY martyrs like BHAGAT SINGH AND KARTAR SINGH SARABHA who gave their lives for our country.

We are proud of SHAHEED RAM MUHAMMAD SINGH AZAD (udham singh)  who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, 20 years later , wiping the stain off  Mother India's face.

We are proud of those JAWANS who keep the pride of our country at our borders. Punjabi's have an age long tradition of giving the first son of their family to the Army.

SO, It is because of these people that we take pride in the fact that we belong to the land of five rivers. It is because of them, we all keep our heads up high.

BUT THIS SHOULD NOT BE MISINTERPRETED!! THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE THINK WE ARE SUPERIOR TO OTHERS AND WE THINK OTHERS ARE OUR SLAVES!!

If you go and talk to a punjabi i am sure (s)he will talk to you with humility, befriend a punjabi and (s)he can give his/her life on the name of that friendship!! I am sorry if you've met people who have ever treated you otherwise for we are those who start their prayers (Ardas) with:

"NANAK NAAM CHARDI KALAH TERE BHANE SARBAT DA BHALA"
MEANING:

Nanak Naam - Glorifies the name of the Lord

Chardi Kala - Asks for the prosperity and goodwill of His creation

Tere Bhane - Is to seek contentment under His will

Sarbat Da Bhala - Seeks the WELL BEING OF ALL CREATIONS

So, it would be going against our very principles if we think ill of others, humiliate them.

As for the rest of the questions raised by Anonymous:

--> THE JATT ISSUE:
i am not the only one in the history of ever to say this, but "PUNJAB DOES NOT MEAN ONLY JATT"...i mean there are people of all the castes and religions hindus, muslims, sikhs and others, jatt is a subcaste of sikhs and trust me there are other sikh subcastes too.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE STOP LISTENING TO HONEY SINGH!!! (or YO YO...whatever) i mean that person presents a false image of the actual Punjabis/Jatts. The jatts they show in most of the songs you hear a tiny percentage of the jatt population.Yes the Jatt is a very open hearted guy but he DOES NOT KILL HIS EMEMIES, nor does he keep a lot of guns. Yes the Jatt has lands, but nearly not as much money you think he does, rather there are jatts who work hard all day in that land to feed his family, there are jatts who need to sell his land to get a loan to marry his daughter. So i humbly request you not to stereotype the entire population.

-->THE UP/BIHAR SITUATION:
I once remember my milk man cribbing about the fact that his so called "bhaiya" left, and how he cannot manage without him. The migrants from UP and Bihar are an integral part of Punjab. It is clearly evident from the fact that WE HAVE NEVER ISSUED PUBLIC THREATS TO THEM TO LEAVE "OUR" LAND. And they are facing troubles in other parts of India.

And Rest Sardar-Bhaiya is a complicated relationship and even though the use of word "bhaiya" may seem derogatory, it is not. The fact is Sardar cannot do without bhaiya!! And all those people(even from Punjab) who think otherwise are ignorant.

-->FEMALE ISSUE:
Our culture has always promoted freedom of women. Have you never seen girls do the "giddha" (the girl equivalent of bhangra)?? The dance form reflects the society and culture. We always had a free society, our folklore is full of girls playfully taunting male members of the family, indicating the freedom of expressions we encouraged. If you say you are from Punjab you should know all this!!

I agree incidents of women abuse happen, honor killings happen!! And people are still close minded. But just because a few people do bad deeds does not mean you blame the entire race. And please don't make it sound as if it happens only in Punjab. We are a part of the rest of the country, and we too are constantly battling with these problems. And WE HAVE STATS IN OUR FAVOR TO SAY SITUATION HAS IMPROVED AND WILL CONTINUE TO IMPROVE!!

WE RESPECT WOMEN!! JUST LIKE BABA NANAK ASKED US TO!!

MANY HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES TO KEEP THIS PRIDE AND WE SHALL NOT LET GO OF IT.......RATHER WE INVITE YOU TO BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE, WHERE YOU ARE FROM, OF WHAT YOU DO, AND YOU WILL HAVE OUR RESPECT FOR THAT.........AS LONG AS YOU DONT HURT ANYONES HEART!! :)

P.S: I apologize for giving only sikh referances/quotes, there are equally inspiring hindus, muslims and christians quotes/references in Punjab but we all share the same ideology...forgive me for my limited knowledge!!!

Punjabis are carefree

It really humbles me to be able to reply to this question. Actually since our childhood we have been told stories with the moral, "all you have to do is be a good guy and GOD does the rest for you" and i quote Guru Nanak Dev Ji:

"NANAK CHINTA MAT KARO CHINTA TIS HE HAI, JAL MAIN JANT UPAAEEN TINA VI ROZI DE"
meaning: don't worry about anything in your life, it is he(GOD) who worries for you all the time, and not just you, he worries about every other organism in this world and provides them food.

So, What do you do when thoughts like these are deep embedded into your subconscious mind?........"YOU LIVE LIFE SINGH SIZE"

Patial peg

Let me tell you the story of "PATIALA PEG" to illustrate this:

Once upon a  time The Maharaja of Patiala, an avid sportsman, invited the Irish team; "The Viceroy's Pride", to play a friendly match of tent pegging. It was then that he invented the famous "Patiala Peg" to trick the Irish team into drinking more than they could handle so his own team could win. And guess what....THEY WON!!

So, in a way booze helped us humiliate the Goras.....I mean, How, on the land of five rivers, can you not be proud of that. Point being its hereditary. We really can handle our booze well. AND NO NOT ALL PUNJABIS DRINK!!

Punjabi is beautiful

Punjabi is a beautiful language. And contrary to popular belief its not a harsh language full of abusive slang (although i don't "completely" deny this point), it is one of the most polite languages i know (i mean have you never heard any of us talking to our mothers....we're like literally puking rainbows). It is a language chosen by our gurus to preach us, it is a language chosen by baba bulleh shah (the bulla ke jana main kon guy....NO not the guy who sung the song), it is the language in which poets of our land like Shiv Kumar Batalvi (birha da sultan) expressed the pain of longing for their beloved.

Tell me ONE language that has not been corrupted by abusive slang. The only difference being that we make it sound really funny!! So all those people, who laughed each and every time we abused someone, should be blamed for it. Plus we generally abuse our best friends. It's our special way of showing affection, by not caring about the words being said, rather paying heed to the intentions with which it is being said....so when we say "TU YAAR PAKKA PENCHOD A" we mean he is my best friend!!!

Why punjabi is the best

Why are Punjabis so proud of being a punjabi?

I have often seen punjabis answer the following questions with a simple phrase "we are punjabi" and I seriously want to know why do they boast so much about being a punjabi

Q1) Why do they eat so much?
Q2) Why do they abuse so much?
Q3) Why do they drink so much?
Q4) Why are they so carefree?
Q5) What are they proud of?

I want some good reasons as to how the phrase mentioned in the question justifiably answers the questions mentioned above?

I feel this is a very relevant question and i'll try my best to give a rational justification.  (please pardon my English)

Q1) Why do we eat so much?

Ans: It is common knowledge that Punjab is known for its fertile land. Agriculture is the largest industry in Punjab; it is the largest single producer of wheat in India. And not just that, if you talk to Punjabis from our parent's generation you would find out that at some point or the other they owned cattle (well...most of them did). So, What do you do when you see food and rivers of milk everywhere (i mean figuratively....ofcourse!)........"YOU THANK BABA NANAK FOR NOT MAKING GLUTTONY A SIN FOR US"

Q2) Why do we abuse so much?
